Fifth-Wheel Towing with Your Gooseneck Hitch

There are a variety of adapters on the market that let you tow a fifth-wheel trailer with a gooseneck hitch. You can use a coupler adapter that replaces the pin box on your fifth-wheel trailer and then attaches to the gooseneck hitch in your truck bed. But these adapters often require modifications to your trailer that can void the warranty. Another option would be using fifth-wheel rails that mount directly to your gooseneck hitch, usually by dropping into the hitch's ball hole. But to do this you have to make 2 separate purchases - the adapter plate that has the rails and a standard fifth-wheel hitch.

B&W Companion Simple Removal

With the Companion from B&W, you get a heavy-duty fifth-wheel trailer hitch that mounts in your truck bed by connecting directly to your Turnoverball gooseneck hitch with the included components. No modifications are required to your truck or trailer. And no additional parts are required for the system to work.

Quiet, Secure Ride

The 1" thick jaw on the Companion is precision machined to provide a tight, sturdy connection. And unlike slide-bar models, the rounded 2-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

B&W Companion Bushings

In addition to the sturdy jaw, the Companion has durable polyurethane bushings built in to provide a smoother, more comfortable towing experience. These bushings sit on top of the pivot arms that support the fifth-wheel head. Because the head is resting on a padded area, it is able to pivot without clanking. The ability of the head to pivot - both front to back and side to side - along with the trailer also helps to limit the chucking that may occur with a more static hitch.

Non-Binding Latch Handle

The dual jaw on the Companion is operated by a simple-to-use cam-action handle. This handle allows you to quickly and easily release the jaws on the hitch, even if you are on uneven terrain. If any binding does occur between your truck and trailer, the jaws may remain closed after you move the handle to the open position. But because the handle is unlatched, there is nothing keeping the jaws closed except for the binding pressure. Therefore, simply driving your truck forward will be enough to force the jaws to open.

The cam-action handle is held in the closed position with the included pin and clip. For extra security, you can replace the pin with a sturdy padlock. The shackle on the lock you choose should have a diameter of 5/16", height of 3", and a width of 2-1/4".

Built-In Slider

Most often used on trucks with 6' beds, a slider helps to eliminate clearance problems during slow-speed turns. When you are towing a fifth-wheel trailer, your hitch must be situated on the cab side of your truck's rear axle. However, at slow speeds you can use a slider to slide the fifth-wheel hitch (and the trailer) toward your truck's tailgate and past the rear axle, creating enough space between the cab of your truck and the trailer to permit less-restricted turning.

The slider that is built into the base of the Companion allows for 12" of fore and aft travel to give you the clearance you need.

Installation of the B&W Companion

To install the Companion, position the slider base so that the post inserts into your Turnoverball hitch's ball hole (in place of the hitch ball). Secure the post using the handle of the Turnoverball, just as you would secure the hitch ball. The post is square like the base of your gooseneck hitch ball. This square design helps to eliminate any twisting or turning of the post - and therefore the mounted fifth-wheel hitch - in your gooseneck hitch.

The next step is to set up the Companion's pivot arms. The arms are what allow the hitch to be adjusted front to back as well as up and down for optimal positioning. As a result, this hitch can accommodate the height of your trailer and also help to give you some additional cab clearance. To adjust either the height of the hitch or the fore/aft positioning, just attach the hitch's pivot arms in the desired location on the base.

The hitch head installs on top of the pivot arms. When you have the head in position, simply secure it to the arms with the included pins.

I absolutely love how easily my B&W Companion slider operates! It’s way easier to operate the pin jaws than my old hitch with its spring-loaded bar latch. And the bearing slider moves smoothly without binding like my old rolling slider. I can’t stress enough how much more confident I feel using this high quality 5th wheel hitch.

by:

Well made product, very heavy. The slider was Well worth the money, avoiding damaging my new truck. The toyhauler was easy to maneuver in reverse.

by:

what a horrible experience buying from trailer. The company takes your money and then takes no responsibility for the actual delivery of the product. $[XX] spent, but I do not have the hitch.

I purchased the B&W 20K Companion Slider & Underbed Mount System (UMS) for my 2015 Ford F150 extended cab (with 6 foot bed) over a year ago because it was the only solution that was removable. Construction and finish was very nice and still looks great. Installation wasn't too difficult but the 4” hole in the bed needs to be exact otherwise getting it square will be very difficult. Overall the slider works great but must be mounted directly on the bed and cannot be mounted over a plastic bed liner. Once installed everything worked great however after numerous trips I've yet to need or use the slider backing up as I can turn 80+ degrees without ever hitting or coming close to the truck cab (towing 2018 Cougar Half Ton Series 5th wheel). Also the slider is very heavy (head 75 lbs + base 207 lbs = 282 lbs) to remove and install (takes two people or an overhead winch). Plus the overall hitch weight (head, base & UMS is 394 lbs) puts me very close to the GVWR once the truck & trailer is fully loaded hence in hindsight I probably should have gone with the fixed 5th wheel hitch (total just 318 lbs compared to 400 lbs) instead as it would have saved 81 lbs and costs $489 less but at least I have the option to slide it back if ever needed.

Great product awesome that it came per Assembled

by:

Have not assembled yet. But looks fully in tack. Will see in a couple of days. Looks well made, heavy steel product. I'm excited, so let's see.

by:

It was very easy to install, very solid hitch and with it, quick and easy to hook up to the 5th wheel camper. Thank you so much in having a person to person phone call, to describe what style I needed prior to purchasing.

by: 01/27/2023

I’ve made 3 different purchases in the last few weeks, turn over ball gooseneck, Firestone airbags, and the companion fifth wheel and to say they all went smoothly is and understatement. The website is 2nd to none, the install instructions and videos are spot on and easy to follow, shipping is fast and well communicated. Will definitely be a returning customer and highly suggest etrailer.com to everyone. Great company! Installed on 2015 ram 2500 mega cab

I knew this was big, but I didn't know it was THIS BIG! I have an '03 Ford F250 SuperDuty, Crew Cab, 4x4, short bed with a B&W Turnoverball Gooseneck hitch, and this slider was highly recommended by many across the internet and locally.

My delivery date was about 20-days out from order date, however, it came 13 days early, much to my uninformed surprise. T-Force shippers came by my home at least 2x and did not even call me so I could arrange to be present to help them. My wife happened to come home and the driver had just turned around in our cul-de-sac and saw her pull in the driveway.

The T-Force driver was able to connect with my wife, and he was so kind and professional during the entire delivery. Much to my surprise, the driver brought the entire shipment into my garage and was sooo kind to allow my wife a moment to clear a convenient space for the hitch. The driver actually brought the hitch INTO my garage and did not leave it at the curb like so many other shippers have done with other items I have purchased over the years!

I AM AMAZED AND THANKFUL FOR THE T-FORCE DRIVER and his PROFESSIONALISM!

I read the shipping documents when I came home and saw that the entire shipment was 310 lbs, not sure if the pallet and boxes were included, I have to assume YES, but expect the hitch to weigh about 250lbs - 275lbs, and I cannot find a weight in the item on etrailer.

It took 3 of us to lift the base into the bed of my truck and get it seated into the gooseneck hitch. I still have to adjust the runners for the bed ridges, but that will be easy enough when it warms up a bit. My intent was to get the garage floor space back.

I did not even notice it being in the truck as the ride seems to be about the same, but I do not wish to keep it in the truck when not being used so I can use my truck like a truck. The hitch takes up most of the bed of my short bed F250, and I hope to experience that I made a good choice with the slider in a week or two.

Due to the weight of the assembly, I am going to try and use my engine hoist to install/remove it as I cannot do so by myself, it is extremely heavy and awkward. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! Unless you have adequate help, you should consider how you will remove it from your vehicle.

Overall my experience with eTrailer over the years has been perfect and this purchase was perfect as well. eTrailer has been consistent with me and I like that.

The quality of the B&W products, MADE IN AMERICA, are TOP NOTCH and EXPENSIVE. But you get what you pay for and I would in no way risk my families safety on some cheap CHINAMART equipment like this.

I am WELL PLEASED with the B&W gear and eTrailer service and I will return.

by:

I absolutely love my Companion hitch. It is the quietest hitch I have ever owned.
It also has the the strongest and thickest jaws around the fifth wheel king pin I have ever owned. The slide is very easy to operate and even though it is quite heavy for a 69 year old man to take it out and put it in my truck I still would recommend it to anyone who needs a combo gooseneck and fifth wheel hitch set up.
There is absolutely no slop or movement of the king pin in the jaws, unlike most other style fifth wheel hitches that I have owned in the past.
In my opinion you would have to go way out on a limb to try and top this one.

Still feel the same. This fifth wheel hitch is awesome. Totally love it and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a great hitch. The ordering process and assistance I received was top notch. Quick delivery as well.

by:

The B and W Companion gooseneck and fifth wheel adapter works very nicely and when removed the pickup box has no additional brackets or hardware that get in the way of the load. The only reason I did not give it a full 5 stars is that it is too heavy to be removed by one person unless assisted by a lifting device. I use my portable cherry picker to lift it out of the receiver tube. Other than that small issue I am very happy with the product and would purchase it again.

I have pulled my 34 foot 5th wheel over 7000, miles in the year that I have owned the Companion hitch and have had no issues. Being new to a 5th wheel I have nothing to compare it to, but I couldn’t imagine anything out performing this setup. I still appreciate the fact that when I pull the hitch out of the box of my truck there is nothing that interferes with any load that I haul, weather it is a load of lumber or landscaping mulch. Only down side is the overall weight of the hitch when I remove it alone, I do need a mobile cherry picker. Well worth the price and would recommend it to anyone.

Thanks for the feedback, we have had other customers tell us that they do some disassembly of the head from the base to help when removing their companion from the bed of their truck. It is still a daunting task, but eliminating some weight while trying to move it works a little better.

by:

I have loved this hitch. The ordering process was easy and it was shipped immediately. Installation was easy and took me about 1 hour. we have used this hitch to pull our 31 foot fifth wheel trailer over the last year and have had absolutely no problems. I would recommend this hitch to anyone.

by:

Easy to install, great customer service, good partnership with the delivery company. The hitch arrived quickly, no damage to even the box it was shipped in

by:

Very heavy and very well built haven’t hauled with it yet but it seems like it will haul just about anything smoothly

by:

Best choice to keep your gooseneck options and have a 5th wheel. Went together easily video helpful Got the slide options even in an 8 ft box glad we did HEAVY

Great be sure to get the fifth wheel kingpin lifter to lift the 5th wheel out so you have a truck bed We use the sliding 5th wheel when we hook up so it is closer to me as I line it up

by:

The B&W Companion hitch is great. I pull a 40 foot fifth wheel at about 14000 lbs. Great ride with no "chucking". It can be tough to take in and out of bed. I use a small utility tractor with pallet forks and that makes it real easy to do by yourself. If not, plan on two people at least to put in and take out.

by:

This hitch feels incredibly well made and B&W customer support is incredible. One of the bed rail strips came loose after a month or so of owning it and only a few uses. Turns out the screw was stripped. After contacting B&W looking to purchase a replacement as it was likely my mistake, they sent a whole new strip free of charge. I will definitely purchase B&W products from etrailer again.

I love it. And B&W support is great.

by:

The extra money I spent for this, was worth every penny. Simple to install and use.

by:

Well built 5th wheel hitch. Simple to use and works great. Instructions were easy to read and understand. Took maybe an hour to put together and was hooking up to my camper.

by:

Upgraded to the B&W slider from an Anderson Ultimate. The reason was the short bed truck I'm pulling with. Initially the hitch was awesome and slid easily. While it says there is no lubrication required, it started sliding really hard (had to hold the trailer brakes and jerk the truck forward pretty hard to get it to slide back). I tried dry lube - no better. Finally shot some wd-40 on the slide bars and under the hitch and it's back to gliding pretty well. Another shortfall are the rubber bumpers that are and the end of each slide rail - they don't hold the hitch tight enough in position so I do get some noise as the hitch moves (ever so slightly) back and forth. The hitch is solid (heavy) and well built. If buying again I'd likely get an auto slider even with the extra weight it costs me in the bed of the truck

by:

Great product. The sliding adapter allows for a trouble free parking experience. This is the smartest purchase I've made in a long time. Our fellow traveling family bought a fixed gooseneck hitch. Didn't work out so well. My buddy put a dimple in the upper left rear corner of his new 2017 F-250 due to lack of clearance with his fifth wheel. Broke out his back window too. A no-kidding $10,000 repair (aluminum pillar could not be repaired, required complete roof swap). He saw my sliding set up, bought one that week. He loves his too. I've even swapped the fifth wheel adapter to one of my other trucks. Would recommend this product to anyone.

We offer a lift bracket, part # DM6100 that you might be interested in. The bracket locks into the hitch like a king pin would and offers a safe lifting point that wont damage the hitch.

As long as your Chevy long bed truck has a B and W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch installed in it you can use the B and W Companion slider hitch part # BWRVK3400 you have. The # BWRVB3405 is just the slider base.

  • Recommendation for Reese Goose Box With Too Little Height Clearance on 2017 Ford F-250 4x4
The Reese Goose Box 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Air Ride Coupler Adapter # RP85FR may not be the best fit. If you have already adjusted the air and the position of the connection, then it is not ideal as you really do want the 7 inches for proper turning clearance on an incline. You can gain 1 inch by using the High-Rise Ball # BWGNXA2050, but it sounds like you need a different option than the Goose Box for your 2017 Ford F-250 4x4. If you want to send a photo to confirm proper installation,...

  • Difference Between B&W BWGNRK1108 and BWGNRK1108-5W Turnover Ball Gooseneck Hitch
There is no difference between the two. We have two similar but different part numbers because we market the # BWGNRK1108 as a gooseneck hitch and the # BWGNRK1108-5W as the mount for the # BWRVK3400 sliding version of the B&W Companion 5th wheel hitch for short bed trucks or # BWRVK3500 for long bed trucks. By having two different part numbers for the identical part, the hitch is easier to Google search for. If you'd like to install a 7-way trailer connector in the truck bed so you...

  • Gooseneck Hitch Recommendation 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 Short Bed
The B and W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch part # BWGNRK1313 is the best option we have for your 2003 Dodge Ram 2500 as it requires no drilling to install, is easy to use and very reliable, the ball flips over, and has a 30k capacity. It also easily converts to a fifth wheel hitch with the Companion part # BWRVK3400 as well. For a somewhat similar option the Curt part # C607-661 that you referenced would work as well but the passenger side wheel well does need to get notched.

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation that Can Fit 2012 Ram 3500 with B and W Turnoverball
While there isn't a way to add the puck system to your 2012 Ram 3500 while keeping your B and W Turnoverball gooseneck hitch I think I might have a solution that would work for you. Since it sounds like you want to be able to tow a fifth wheel hitch while also retain your gooseneck hitch we have the Companion hitches that fit directly to your current hitch like with the part # BWRVK3400 for a slider hitch if you have a short bed truck or the part # BWRVK3500 for if you have a long bed truck...

  • Fifth Wheel Hitch Recommendation for Truck with B&W Turnover Gooseneck Hitch
You are in luck as B and W makes a fifth wheel hitch that is designed to fit their Turnoverball gooseneck hitches and it happens to be one of the nicest hitches available. If you have a long bed truck you would want the Companion # BWRVK3500, and if you have a short bed truck you would need the part # BWRVK3400 as this is the slider hitch version. Slider hitches allow short bed trucks to make tight turns since the head of the hitch can be slid back to give better clearance between truck...

  • Location of B&W 5th Wheel Hitch in Relation to Rear Axle 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500HD Short Bed
When the B and W installation kit # BWGNRK1012-5W is installed for the Companion hitch, the center of the ball hole will be 44-3/4 inches forward of the rear edge of the bed on your 2013 Chevy Silverado 2500HD short bed. This will tell you where the center of the hitch will be once installed. Companion hitch # BWRVK3400-5W and # BWRVK3400 are sliders. They have 12 inches of travel allowing you to making tighter turns unlike the fixed hitch version that allows you to move the head further...

  • Is The B&W Turnover or Curt Gooseneck Hitch Better For a 2023 Ford F-350 Super Duty?
I recommend the B&W Turnoverball Underbed Gooseneck Trailer Hitch # BW73FR over the Curt # C59VV for your 2023 Ford F-350 Super Duty. While both hitches are rated for 30,000lbs and have a lifetime warranty the B&W is made in the USA while the Curt is assembled from overseas parts. Both hitches can be installed with the bed in place. I also prefer the B&W having the square opening with the locking pin as this allow you to flip the ball over for storage and to add accessories over the Curt...
